Lara
Ink on paper, 31 x 23 cm

A new portrait of my housemate, the lovely Lara, drawn entirely with a variety of inks and no computer manipulation whatsoever on one single sheet of watercolour paper; so this is precisely how it appears on the paper I am pleased to say. It may therefore not only be seen on the computer screen, but also in a on a frame on a wall. Maybe even one of your walls?
I for one am happy with it, as I seem to have found a way to bring together my love of both very free abstraction with very finely wrought realism. I must make more pictures along these lines. How would you like your own portrait done like this? Both an abstract interpretation of your personality together with your likeness…

Ms Kim
Carbon on paper, Photoshop

This drawing of Ms Kim was drawn from life using compressed carbon on paper.I have made a slightly different version of it here than the one on my website, with some very small final touches added in Photoshop: I have tried to give it something of the look of a photograph with a very shallow depth of field, whilst not losing anything of the original feeling the physical drawing has. I don’t like such works to bring to mind the use of computer manipulation or of the use of camera or light box; though for me such tools must sometimes be used then I would prefer it that they do not leave any obvious evidence of their use on the work. To this end ideally I would always work from life, yet as this is not always possible, I draw from life as often as I can.
